forudsætninger

Prerequisites

When registering, PhD students are asked to submit a 3–5-page text on their respective theoretical journeys, on how their theorizing about the relationship between ecological concerns and everyday practice was intended to become of relevance, on what challenges emerged in the theory-practice intersections, and on how one may learn from these challenges for further innovating theory. These papers are to serve as preparatory reading materials for the fellow PhD students to get an impression of the other projects’ background and knowledge ambitions, and for the senior researchers to prepare questions for the joint discussion rounds.

Course content

This 3-day course invites international PhD students from all disciplines to consider the societal-ecological relevance of their intended conceptual developments, with a focus on how these may have an impact on citizens’ daily lives. Emphasis is put on the projects’ theoretical innovation potentials and their concrete challenges with making such innovation relevant to the research project participants, collaboration partners, civil society, politicians, or more generally: to the broader ecology. Even though emphasis is put on research projects’ theoretical challenges, all projects – also those with a strong emphasis on empirical material – are welcome.

In the course we will collectively discuss challenges in overcoming the wicked theory-practice gap prominently present in the translation of ecological concerns into sustainable daily actions (and vice versa). Questions that will be addressed by the course teachers will be generated in response to the participants’ research questions and may include, for instance: To what extent are ecological concerns an integrated part of everyday life? How do these stand in tension with other concerns and priorities, and how do concepts such as ‘care’ assist in making sense of these tensions?

How do different ways of understanding and working with the ecological in everyday life, for instance in terms of notions such as climate justice or environmental justice, transform practices and subjectivities differently in varying societal contexts, and what can the role of the academic researcher be in these transformations? In particular, the presentations will touch upon how culturally and materially grounded psychological and philosophical approaches could help with shedding conceptual light on the potentials and tensions emerging when aiming for both ecological and social sustainability in lived everyday practices.

Learning Objectives: The goal of the course is to support the students’ further development of the theoretical tools they are employing in their research – be it further development of existing theory, challenging existing theory, or exploring novel avenues of theoretical work.
