Overall objective |
An advanced course in social scientific methodology aims to equip students to competently select and apply a given method for the collection, treatment and analysis of data, for the purpose of illuminating an academic problem. The course enables students to argue for the applicability and relevance of the method to the problem, and to master the techniques of the method at a professional level. |

There will be an opportunity to get oral feedback on the exercises and discussions in class. Participants can expect to have collective feedback on the written exams as a whole. ECTS declaration: Reading of course literature and preparation for course lectures - 70 hours Attending lectures - 20 hours Student exercises and preparation of presentations - 15 hours Exam including preparation - 30 hours Total - 135 hours |

Form of examination |
Individual written take-home assignment.
The character limit of the assignment is: 14,400-19,200 characters, including spaces. The character limit includes the cover, table of contents, bibliography, figures and other illustrations, but exclude any appendices. The duration of the take-home assignment is 7 days and may include weekends and public holidays. Assessment: 7-point grading scale. |

Examination and assessment criteria |
After the course, students are expected to have: Consolidated knowledge of and competences to select relevant theory and to operationalize different research questions as a starting point for document analysis. Skills in using software to carry out document analyses of different research questions in a systematic manner. Competencies to reflect over document analysis, quality criteria and for weighing the pros and cons of analytical choices. An ability to communicate and discuss document analyses in a clear and professionally accurate manner. |
