Detailed description of content

Documents are probably the most commonly used materials for social science analysis. This course focuses on how to access, collect, analyse and interpret documents from a variety of domestic sources and international organisations. The course enables students to find the right documents for their projects and provides the students with different tools to conduct document analysis. This includes analysing networks and discourse using documents, and the use of computer software for document analysis. The course consists of the following teaching sessions:

Expected work effort (ECTS-declaration)

Class teaching 20 hours

Student presentations in groups and peer-review: 25 hours

Preparation: 50 hours

Examination: 40 hours (repetition and the actual exam)

  • Knowledge and understanding:

    Knowledge and understanding at an advanced level within the methodological specialisation presented in the course.

    Skills in applying the methodological specialisation presented in the course on an advanced level.

    The competence to provide methodological solutions on the basis of the premises of the course’s methodological specialisation.

  • The competence to reflect on the methodological specialisation of the course based on scientific assessment criteria.

Teaching and working methods

The teaching method consists of tailored training and practice in the method, and it can consist of lectures, exercises, student presentations, etc.

Individual written take-home assignment given by the lecturer.

The character limit of the assignment is: maximum  19,200 characters, including spaces.
The character limit includes the cover, table of contents, bibliography, figures and other illustrations, but exclude any appendices.

The duration of the take-home assignment is 21 days and may include weekends and public holidays.


Assessment: 7-point grading scale.
Form of Re-examination
Individual written take-home assignment given by the lecturer.
