When registering for courses, please be aware of the potential conflicts between courses or exam dates on courses. The planning of course activities at Roskilde University is based on the recommended study programs which do not overlap. However, if you choose optional courses and/or study plans that goes beyond the recommended study programs, an overlap of lectures or exam dates may occur depending on which courses you choose.

The aim of the thesis is to ensure that the student can:

• Identify, delimit and define a relevant issue, summarise the original literature that is relevant to the issue, and conduct a thorough examination of the issue within the academic field of the study programme.

• Compile a comprehensive and precise account of the investigations carried out, and present the results and analysis in accordance with scientific standards.

• Critically analyse, interpret, discuss and assess one’s own empirical research in relation to relevant academic concepts and theories.

• Discuss and place in perspective the results of the thesis work in a broader scientific and societal context.

• Communicate knowledge and/or visual expressions of design and design processes.

• Take responsibility for one’s own academic development and specialisation.

In addition to the academic content, the assessment of the thesis will also take writing and spelling skills into account. The thesis may include text, photographs, sound recordings, illustrations, maps and video recordings, and physical 3D models, computer-based 3D visualisations/simulations, etc., may also be included.

As part of the thesis study, the student may plan and partially or wholly carry out his or her own design process, or participate in a design process organised by others. If the student’s independent efforts result in a design product, the creative and innovative aspects of this work will be incorporated into the overall assessment of the thesis study. The activity must be documented in a manner which enables it to be assessed.

Thesis work include five supervisor meetings.

• Knowledge and understanding:

• Research-based knowledge of selected subject areas and understanding of and reflection on how one’s own thesis research fits into the academic context

• Knowledge and understanding of the academic genre and the academic target group to which the master’s thesis is addressed

• Skills:

• Proficiency in using and mastering scientific theories and methods while working with a defined, professional and relevant research question

• Proficiency in identifying scientific research questions

• Proficiency in analysing, categorising, discussing, arguing, reflecting and evaluating on a scientific basis

• Proficiency in critically addressing and choosing scientific sources, literature, theory and methods

The Master’s thesis can be made by using text, photos, audio recordings, illustrations, maps and movies, and can include physical 3D models, computer-based 3D visualisations/simulations. As part of the Master’s thesis work, the student can plan and (in whole or in part) complete his/her own design process or the student can participate in a design process organised by others. When a design product is available, as a result of the student's independent efforts, the creative and innovative aspects of this work will be included in the overall assessment of the Master’s thesis. The activity must be documented in such a way that it is possible to make an assessment.

Master Thesis

The Master’s Thesis assessment is based on the written product and the oral exam.

The master thesis can be written individually or in a group. Permitted group size: 2-4 students.

The oral exam is individual for students that have written the thesis alone or students that have requested an individual exam. All other oral master thesis exams are conducted as group exams.

The oral exam will be based on the master thesis. The students begin the exam with a short presentation (5 min per student), followed by a dialogue between the student, examiner and external examiner. There may be posed questions related to the subject area(s) that the master thesis covers.

The assessment is individual and based on the student's individual performance.
The assessment is an assessment of the master thesis and the oral performance.

The character limits of the master thesis are:
For 1 student: 105,600-163,200 characters, including spaces.
For 2 students: 146,400-172,800 characters, including spaces.
For 3 students: 151,200-182,400 characters, including spaces.
For 4 students: 151,200-182,400 characters, including spaces.

The character limits include the cover, table of contents, summary, bibliography, figures and other illustrations, but exclude any appendices.

The master thesis must include a summary.
The summary can either be written in English or Danish.
The summary is included in the overall assessment.

Time allowed for exam including time used for assessment for:
1 student: 30 minutes.
2 students: 60 minutes.
3 students: 75 minutes.
4 students: 90 minutes.

Writing and spelling skills in the thesis are part of the assessment.

Permitted support and preparation materials at the oral exam: All.

Assessment: 7-point grading scale.
Moderation: External examiner.
