How can we address the ecological challenges of economic activity, such as climate change, the biodiversity crisis and the trespassing of other planetary boundaries? And how can we address the potential economic challenges arising from the ecological crisis and social-ecological transformation, such as economic and financial instability, unemployment, distribution conflicts or limits to real GDP growth? Videregående Økologisk Økonomi/Advanced Ecological Economics immerses students in the cutting-edge theories, empirical data, and practical methods of Ecological Economics, equipping them to tackle real-world sustainability challenges. Students are introduced to fundamental concepts of Ecological Economics. These concepts are put into historical and institutional context, deepening the students' knowledge of current ecological issues in relation to economic systems. Fundamental concepts are then operationalized through examining data and training in methods to compute environmental footprints (carbon, material, energy) and to assess social-ecological transformation policies at the macroeconomic level. The course is structured as topic-oriented and research-based. Each lecture builds upon readings, includes interactive discussions (possibly hands-on presentations), and in-class exercises. Students engage critically with real-world data and debates, ensuring both theoretical depth and practical application. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of the multiple dimensions of the ecological crisis. They become able to understand and devise solutions to specific and interrelated ecological problems with socio-economic implications. They also develop the ability to think relationally and systemically about the ecological crisis, and to account for the interconnections and interdependencies related to it. Videregående Økologisk Økonomi/Advanced Ecological Economics builds upon the Økologisk Økonomi 1/Ecological Economics 1 (ØØ1) and Political Economy of Social-Ecological Transformation (PESET) courses delivered in the Bachelor’s in Economics and Social Sciences at RUC. However, prior enrollment in ØØ1/EE1 and PESET is not a pre-requisite. This course provides a solid foundation, ensuring that both newcomers and those with prior background in Ecological Economics acquire the necessary expertise to move forward. Students without any priori knowledge of Ecological Economics are provided with introductory material they can familiarise themselves with before the course. |

| Overall plan and expected work effort |
The total workload associated with a 10 ECTS course is 280 hours. For this course, the workload is allocated as: Classes: 24 or 30 hours Preparation for lectures (readings and other tasks): 200 hours or 194 hours (approx. 6 to 8 hours per hour of lecture) Exam: 56 hours This class requires constant students' effort in reading and preparation, thus the reading and preparation load is significant. Applying the standard of 5 pages per hour, 194-200 hours of preparation amount to 970-1000 pages of readings through the semester. Some preparation work will not involve reading but other tasks, so the total reading amount of 970-1000 pages must be understood as an indicative upper limit. |

| Evaluation and feedback |
Students receives feedback from the teacher through in-class discussions, exercises, and questions and answers. Students may also receive individual feedbacks on their final exam upon request. The course is evaluated regularly. At the start of the course, the course convenor is informed if the course is to be evaluated and notifies the students. The evaluation is carried out in accordance with the study board's evaluation practice. |

About the exam The written take-home assingment will be in a topic of own choice. Assessment criteria In assessing the student, emphasis will be placed on the extent to which the student demonstrates: - Displaying an understanding of the multidimensional ecological crisis - Ability to define, critically discuss and apply theories and concepts taught in class and from the readings - Ability to relate economic activities to specific ecological impacts - Precise knowledge of the technical tools, ability to apply them and to assess their advantages and drawbacks - Ability to formulate and assess policies to address the ecological crisis An assessment will also be made of whether the home assignment meets all formal requirements. Use of AI In this exam, the use of generative AI (GenAI) tools is allowed as per the university's guidelines for the use of AI. Specifically, the following points must be observed: • When using GenAI tools, you must include a description of the purpose of using GenAI and which GenAI are used and how they have used. The description is assessed the same way as other methodology sections regarding the use of relevant literature, course’s general learning objectives, and assessment criteria. • Text copied from GenAI chats must be quoted the same way as citations from other texts.
