ACADEMIC CONTENT
Overall objective

Based on cooperation with one or more companies or other agencies in the field of urban planning, students achieve practical skills and competences in working as a planning consultant, doing analytical work in a professional context. Students learn how to do solid analysis, which can be used in consultancy and planning. Students also develop skills to present to professional companies and/or other external partners.

Detailed description of content

The Live Case project is meant to train students in doing practical consultancy work, working with a consultancy within the broad field of urban planning. In this case, the cooperation is with Neighborhood Lab, founded by Ofri Earon. We will work together with Ofri Earon, architect and PhD, who has extensive experience within urban planning with focus on social sustainability in residential areas. Live Case project groups will collect data, analyse and present findings to Ofri and her clients, working with a defined brief. Meanwhile, groups will also be supervised by professor Jørgen Ole Bærenholdt in working with their exam project report, building on the collected data and presenting the analysis, findings and recommendations in a professional style.

The focus is on how youth can boost the neighborhood—and how the neighborhood can empower the youth. We will explore what matters most to young people and investigate existing methods for local youth engagement. This will form the basis for rethinking how to involve youth in a way that gives them purpose, builds confidence, and strengthens communities. The exact cases and questions to be investigated will be explained in Moodle.

Course material and Reading list

To frame their investigations, project groups will do their own literature search to establish a professional literature and project review of existing knowledge and practice relevant to the brief and its research questions. Ofri Earon will also provide a short reading list.

Overall plan and expected work effort

The Live Case Project cooperation with Neighborhood Lab will take place over four in-site sessions, to be organised in time and place, with possible Teams sessions in-between.

The Live Case project is 20 ECTS, equivalent to totally 540 hours, distributed this way

4 in-site sessions and 2-3 Teams sessions: 4x2+2 hours = 10 hours Preparation for sessions including presentation 4x20 hours = 80 hours Reading for and writing literature review = 100 hours Field work = 80 hours Analysis including writing drafts = 120 hours Supervisor meetings with RUC supervisor = 3 hours Writing final project report = 130 hours Exam including preparation = 17 hours

Format
Evaluation and feedback

Students will receive feed-back on their presentations and draft writing during sessions and supervisor meetings. Sessions as well as the program will be evaluated by students at the last session.
