ACADEMIC CONTENT
Overall objective

The workshop module Project Management and Evaluation trains students to manage and evaluate projects in public and private organisations. It introduces students to the techniques used in planning, managing and evaluating a process of achieving project goals within given constraints. It facilitates the application of these techniques in practical exercises.

Detailed description of content

The course is structured around the group-based work on developing a project plan for a fictive project, which also constitutes the examination assignment. Lectures will gradually introduce aspects of the project plan followed by workshops where drafts of project plan sections will be discussed and subject to feed-back from both teachers and student peers. The overview of the course activities below illustrates how the course structure reflects and feeds into the work on the project plan.

Module 1: Project definition • Lecture: Introduction – defining project management and projects • Lecture: Project initiation and theory of change • First workshop: Project idea Module 2: Project design • Lecture: Stakeholder analysis and engagement • Lecture: Results-based management • Second workshop: Project design Module 3: Project operationalization • Lecture: Budgeting and time planning • Lecture: Evaluation
• Lecture: Risk management and sustainability • Third workshop: Final draft Examination • Submission of the final examination version of the project plan • Oral group exams

ASSESSMENT
Overall learning outcomes

  • Students acquire skills to carry out project planning, documentation and evaluation, assess risks, find solutions to deliver within scope, time and budget constraints, and optimise the use of these resources to deliver on the goals. They also learn to build evaluation tools into project design and use these during and after project management. They also reflect on how these processes work in an inter-cultural environment.
