| Detailed description of content |
This course aims to introduce a social dimension to the study of Subjectivity and Learning, where the focus is on human beings and their development and learning in diverse contexts. The dimension draws on traditions and ideas from the fields of Psychology and Educational Studies, two interrelated academic disciplines, to explore the many intersections and entanglements that constitute the self and subjectivity. Common to both perspectives is an interest in the development of the subject and the ability to create and contribute to society. Here, classes will explore rational, critical, discursive and materialist understandings of agency and social change. Rather than view psychology as concerned mainly with the inner self, and education with the world as a site of learning, the course will explore the synergies between these two academic traditions to consider a range of relations between subjective experience, social contexts and transformation. Important questions include: how do we become the persons that we are, how do we develop a sense of self and community in diverse contexts, and how can these disciplines contribute to critical, participatory and inclusive worlds? While grounded in knowledges associated primarily with the Global North since the late 19th century, the course also considers how such knowledges are themselves the product of global interactions of ideas and peoples. As importantly, the course explores more recent developments in areas such as technology and artificial intelligence, as well as the challenge of environmental sustainability, all of which suggest more fluid and hybrid forms of subjectivity and selfhood. Portfolio exam The portfolio consists of 5 written products as follows:
These two aspects of the exam support one another, where the individual paper should take into account the various dialogues and insights developed in the learning logs. The aim here is to enable you to reflect on your own learning journey during the semester. The course will be supported by four review classes where exercises and dialogue facilitated by student tutors will help you consolidate the learning from the classes and to help you complete each portfolio task. The character limit: 7,200-26,400 characters, including spaces. The character limits include the cover, table of contents, bibliography, figures and other illustrations, but exclude appendices. The assessment is individual and based on the entire portfolio. |
