Detailed description of content

This course introduces students to the Humanities dimension of "Text and Sign". The course focuses on teaching students to look at texts broadly defined as constructions to be analysed, and at sign systems as semiotic (meaning-making) processes and practices.

Portfolio exam

The portfolio has four parts. All must be submitted together as one file at the end of the course, and should contain 7,200-26,400 characters, including spaces. The four parts of the portfolio are as follows:

#1. Reflection on Mediated Communication

In this portfolio exercise, we want you to think about how different forms of media impact the way you communicate. The goal of this assignment is to reflect on the differences in terms of the communicative ‘situation’. Part #1 should be between 1800 and 3600 characters (including spaces). The specific task will be announced at the end of the class.

#2. Communication Analysis Exercise

In this portfolio exercise, we want you to analyze examples of digital communication based on understandings of communication impacts and representations introduced in the course. Part #2 should be between 1800 and 9600 characters (including spaces). The specific exercise will be announced at the end of the class.

#3. Practical Language Task

In this portfolio exercise, we want you to undertake a practical task related to language studies. The aim of the assignment is to demonstrate your practical skills. Part #3 should be between 1800 and 3600 characters (including spaces). The specific task will be announced at the end of the class.

#4. Language Analysis Exercise

In this portfolio exercise, we want to you analyse examples of discourse with linguistic tools acquired in the course. The aim of the assignment is to demonstrate your analytical skills. Part #4 should be between 1800 and 9600 characters (including spaces). The specific exercise will be announced at the end of the class.
