Detailed description of content

As a RUC student – and as a Global Humanities student – half of your time will be spent on project-based learning. As a member of a project group you will examine problems from the perspective of the four RUC humanities dimensions. Each of these dimensions contributes something different, and a useful way of thinking about the contribution made by the Science and Philosophy dimension is that it offers tools, concepts, and ideas, for reflecting on the questions you want to ask, and how to ask them. In your second and third semester in Global Humanities you will have specialized courses on method and theory. Think of the Science and Philosophy dimension course as offering a first glimpse of ideas that you will need to examine more critically when you take a closer look at what method and theory are all about.

I also want to convey some concrete skills in this course. All sorts of skills are useful when it comes to writing a project – for example, knowing something about good argumentation is important, as you will need to be able to make the case for your own work, and to criticize work that you disagree with. However, the skill I want to focus on in this course is something even more basic: reading. How do you read a text? What sort of texts should you read, and how do you find them? How do you cope with difficult texts? And why stick with texts? For example, what role do videos and podcasts have to play in your learning process? In short: how can I find - and understand - ideas that might be useful for me in my project work? We will return to the theme of reading (and alternatives to reading) throughout the course, and try to figure out as many useful strategies as we can.

Portfolio exam

The portfolio has three parts. All must be submitted together as one file at the end of the course, and should contain 7,200-26,400 characters, including spaces. The three parts of the portfolio are as follows:

#1. Reflections on reading

During the first four lectures, a central theme will be reading and reading practices. Part #1 asks each student to pick a text they found difficult, reflect on why they found it difficult, and explain how they tried to improve their understanding of it. Task #1 will be presented in more detail in our very first session (on Thursday 11 September 2025) and it will be the focus of Review Class 1 (on 2 October). Students are strongly recommended to complete part #1 shortly after this class. Part #1 should be 1800-3600 characters, including spaces.

#2 Different dimensions

The goal of part #2 is to encourage students to stand back and think about their project from a different angle: students not using the philosophy and science dimension must explain what their project might look like if they had used it, and students who are using the philosophy dimension should explain what it might look like if they had used another dimension instead. Task #2 will be discussed in more detail in Session 5 (on 9 October). It can be presented either as a written reflection or as talking points for a presentation. Part #2 will be the focus of Review Class 2 (on 16 October), and students are strongly advised to finish it shortly after this review class. It should be 1800-3600 characters including spaces.

#3 Flying free

As we enter the final stages of the course, the student should have a clearer idea of what aspects of Science and Philosophy interest them most. For part #3, students pick a topic discussed in one of the sessions, and write a text discussing it; examples of potential topics and how to structure the discussion will be given. Part #3 will be the focus of Review Classes 3 and 4, and the text should be 3600-19200 characters including spaces.

Teaching and working methods

Class instruction with supplementary exercise lessons.

Form of examination
Individual written portfolio.

The portfolio consists of 2 to 4 written products, that wholly or partially are are developed during the course. For example, products can be exercise responses, talking points for presentations, written feedback, reflection, and written assignments. The preparation of the products may be subject to time limits.

The character limit: 7,200-26,400 characters, including spaces.
The character limits include the cover, table of contents, bibliography, figures and other illustrations, but exclude appendices.

The portfolio's specific products and the (if relevant) recommended size (character limit) for the individual products are made public on study.ruc.dk before the course begins.

The entire portfolio must be handed in at the same time (uploaded to eksamen.ruc.dk). Handing in the portfolio or parts of the portfolio to the supervisor for feedback, cannot replace the upload to eksamen.ruc.dk.
The submission deadline will be public on study.ruc.dk before the course begins.

The assessment is individual and based on the entire portfolio.
