Overall objective |
An advanced course in social scientific methodology aims to equip students to competently select and apply a given method for the collection, treatment and analysis of data, for the purpose of illuminating an academic problem. The course enables students to argue for the applicability and relevance of the method to the problem, and to master the techniques of the method at a professional level. |
Detailed description of content |
The course is an advanced methodology course on methodology and philosophy of sciences in business administration and leadership. This equips students with advanced research methods to do research in business studies. The course provides ability to use methods and philosophy of sciences in management, organization, and leadership. This research method and philosophy of science course provides advanced study in scientific theory and method within business administration, business studies and business management and leadership. The course aims to give the student a reflexive and practical competence within scientific theory in relation to business administration and business decisions within organization and management. The course’ starting point is philosophy of management, and different research methods are analyzed on this basis. Scientific theory and method in business administration thus includes an introduction to concepts of knowledge and validity in practical business management, methodology and theoretical approaches, qualitative and quantitative approaches, case studies and methods, techniques and methodological design, paradigms, and paradigm conflicts, as well as current practical approaches to the study of business administration issues in concrete business cases. |

Overall plan and expected work effort |
The course is worth 5 ECTS credits and involves a total of 135 working hours for students. These hours are intended to be allocated as follows: course participation 20 hours; preparation for sessions, including additional group work exercises: 75 hours; exam preparation: 10 hours; exam assignment: 30 hours. |

Form of examination |
Group portfolio and oral exam
Permitted group size: 2-4 students. Examples of written products are exercise responses, talking points for presentations, written feedback, reflections, written assignments. The preparation of the products may be subject to time limits. The character limit of the portfolio is: For 2 students: 12,000-18,000 characters, including spaces. For 3 students: 14,400-19,200 characters, including spaces. For 4 students: 16,800-21,600 characters, including spaces. The character limits include the cover, table of contents, bibliography, figures and other illustrations, but exclude any appendices. Time allowed for exam including time used for assessment is for: 2 students: 30 minutes. 3 students: 40 minutes. 4 students: 45 minutes. The assessment is individual and based on the student's individual performance. The assessment is an overall assessment of the written product(s) and the subsequent oral examination.. Permitted support and preparation materials at the oral exam: Course material and own notes. Assessment: 7-point grading scale. Moderation: Internal co-assessor. |
