Detailed description of content

This course introduces students to the Humanities dimension of "Text and Sign". The course focuses on teaching students to look at texts broadly defined as constructions to be analysed, and at sign systems as semiotic (meaning-making) processes and practices.

Expected work effort (ECTS-declaration)

The course is 5 ECTS (27,5 hours/ECTS) = 137,5 hours including the final exam.

  • Session length: 2 hours.

  • Number of sessions: 10.

  • Expected student workload per session: Preparation: 4-6 hours for reading, 2 hours for preparation exercises at review sessions and at home.

  • Attendance: 2 hours Total: 10-12 hours per week.

  • Total course workload excluding exam (10 x 10): 100 hours.

  • Exam: Preparation and doing the two day exam: 37,5 hours

Learning outcomes and assessment criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of theories, methods, concepts, academic traditions and current discourse in the humanistic dimension ‘text and sign’, see the dimension description in appendix 1

  • Proficiency in analysing, comparing and assessing research questions within the dimension ‘text and sign’

Form of examination
Individual written take-home assignment given by the lecturer.

The character limit of the assignment is: 7,200-26,400 characters, including spaces.
The character limit includes the cover, table of contents, bibliography, figures and other illustrations, but exclude any appendices.

The duration of the take-home assignment is 48 hours and may include weekends and public holidays.
