Detailed description of content |
The course is a prerequisite course in connection with conditional uptake. It introduces students to both the problem-oriented project learning (PPL or project work) as well as the basics of philosophy of social science (PSS) and qualitative methods (QM). In relation to the PSS, the focus is laid on understanding the methodological implications of approaching social sciences from different philosophical positions. In relation to methods, the course introduces students to different qualitative methods, focusing both on practical and theoretical aspects, as well as methods' potentials and limitations. Stressing the connections between the PSS and methods, the students will learn about how PSS guides different interests in knowledge production and with it also types of research questions that require appropriate methodological approaches. The course consists of introductory lectures (online); recorded lectures in PSS and QM; exercise, discussion and group work-driven cluster learning (online); as well as independent self-study (primarily in July). The five recorded lectures in PSS will cover an introduction to PSS; positivism and interpretivism; critical realism and critical theory; feminism and standpoint theory; and social constructivism and post-structuralism. The five recorded lectures in QM will cover and introduction to qualitative methods and research designs; interviews and focus groups; ethnography, visual and digital data; coding, data analysis and discourse analysis; and quality assurance, writing up and ethical perspectives. Note: Recorded lectures in PSS and QM will be available at least 72 hours before the relevant clusters in August. Please note: this course will in the summer 2024 take place online |
