Overall objective

This project will allow students to hone and build on skills accumulated in previous semesters to identify, condense and analyse contemporary global and development challenges. Student work in groups on a particular relevant contemporary global and development challenge. They provide a literature review summarizing different analytical approaches to the challenge; an analysis of the phenomenon based on primary material; and a conclusion that addresses possible solutions. The project should collect and analyse various sources from, for example, statistics, databases, newspapers, television, online sources, or through interviews.

Detailed description of content

The project module consists of group work (with groups consisting of up to 5 students), peer-to-peer feedback, and feedback from supervisors. It is comprised of the following activities:

Workshop 1: Contemporary global and development challenges: Cases, Methods and Group Formation Supervisors introduce themselves and point the students towards relevant cases and methods for their projects.

Workshop 2: Cluster supervision session on research questions and methods Supervisors and peers provide feedback on proposed research questions and methods

Workshop 3: A facilitated peer-feedback session on first draft Supervisors facilitate feedback by peers on first draft.

In addition, students will be offered two individual group supervision sessions with the assigned supervisor.

Guidance on the use of quantitative methods in projects and theses

If you and your group find quantitative analyses relevant to answer your research question, and your supervisor cannot help, here is an offer of assistance. We offer a workshop where a group of researchers will talk about how to use quantitative data in projects and theses. We will present an overview of publicly available data sets, as well as the your possibilities, if you wish to collect your own data. We expect you to have taken a course in basic quantitative methods (BC 8 or equivalent).

The workshop is held on September 27 2023, 12:15-02:00 pm, in theory room 25.3-005

After the workshop you/your group will have the opportunity to book an appointment with a skilled student, who will help with downloading and preparing data for analysis and interpretation. If you need extra guidance on any particular issue, you will be referred to a relevant researcher. Contact Ivan Foberg (ifoberg@ruc.dk) to schedule an appointment.

Overall plan and expected work effort

The project is based on group work (with groups consisting of up to 5 students) and peer-to-peer feedback. The supervisors facilitate 4 workshops during the semester. In connection with these workshops, there are fixed deadlines for the draft papers that the groups are required to submit. The students provide each other with feedback on their drafts, and the supervisors can provide additional feedback and guidance to the groups. The supervisors also prepare short presentations to be held during the first two workshops. The presentations form the basis for discussion of important aspects of the project reports, e.g.: How do you compile a multidisciplinary literature review? How should empirical data be presented in a chapter?

10 ECTS = 270 hours (divided between preparation/reading, workshops, supervision, project work, and examination)

For 15 ECTS (= 405 hours), students will write an additional short essay of 24.000 - 35.000 characters including spaces which will address

Overall learning outcomes

  • The project provides students the ability to address global and development challenges from various disciplinary and methodological angles. The outcome is to involve students in the production of an edited e-book (e.g. “Global and Development Challenges 2022”) that for each year will track and showcase the degree.

Form of examination
Oral project exam in groups with individual assessment.

Permitted group size: 2-5 students.

The character limits of the project report are:
For 2 students: 33,600-48,000 characters, including spaces.
For 3 students: 40,800-50,400 characters, including spaces.
For 4 students: 45,600-52,800 characters, including spaces.
For 5 students: 48,000-60,000 characters, including spaces.
The character limits include the cover, table of contents, summary, bibliography, figures and other illustrations, but exclude any appendices.

The project report must include a summary, that is part of the assessment. The summary can either be written in English or Danish.

Time allowed for exam including time used for assessment is for:
2 students: 60 minutes.
3 students: 75 minutes.
4 students: 90 minutes.
5 students: 105 minutes.

Writing and spelling skills in the project report are part of the assessment.

Permitted support and preparation materials at the oral exam: All

Assessment: 7-point grading scale.
Moderation: Internal co-assessor.

Examination and assessment criteria

Explain and evaluate, using relevant terminology, various theories relating to Global and Development studies.

Authoritatively and independently, select and apply relevant theories in relation to a specific case.

Analyse and reflect critically on the project.

Discuss in a creative and solution-oriented way how and to what extent the analysed global and development challenge can be addressed.

Communicate knowledge in oral and written language that is technically precise, well-structured and well-argued.

Besides above following will be part of the assessment • Resume in English or Danish • Writing and spelling skills are part of the assessment.

Oral presentation Same criteria as for project, but also: The student are able to: • Present and communicate • Take part in dialogue and discussion about the written project report The assessment is a collective assessment of all above.
