This course will provide students with knowledge on the principles of ONE HEALTH though inclusion of the principles of human- and environmental health and the link between them to fight health issues at the human-animal environment interface. To understand the collaborative, multisectoral and interdisciplinary approach of One Health, the course includes sessions on human-, animal- and environmental health, Monitoring- and disease control approaches as well as on how diseases spread among people, animals, plants and the environment. Students will be introduced to a number of examples of past- and current factors that have changed the interaction among people, animals, plants and the environment e.g., climate change, human population growth, changed land use, increased international travel and related spread of diseases, food security, environmental contamination. Group project work will provide students with hands-on experience performing One Health.

Through the course sessions and group work, students gain knowledge about how human factors impact the environment and how environmental hazards can serve as early warnings for human health effects.

The course introduces the link between human activities, environmental degradation and human health.

The course introduces a number of cases where environmental impact has implications for human health and vice versa. These cases form the point of departure for the students to understand the interdependency between human and the surrounding environment and analyze how changes in relation to one of the two fields impact the other. This understanding will be framed under the theory about One health.

Pensum and reading material will be announced on Moodle ahead of the course.

The course is a 5 ETCS credit course, corresponding to an expected student work load of ca. 135 hours.

• Lectures and exercises: ca. 40-44 hrs

• Preparation (including preparation for the exam): ca. 88-92 hrs

• Exam: ca. 3 hrs.

We expect thus that students will spend about at least 3-4 hours on preparation for a 2-hour lecture.

The course consists of 22 lectures/exercises, each 2*45 minutes (three of the lectures are optional and will only be used if some subjects require extra attention and/or if we have had to cancel previous lectures).

The course includes formative evaluation based on dialogue between the students and the teacher(s).

Students are expected to provide constructive critique, feedback and viewpoints during the course if it is needed for the course to have better quality. Every other year at the end of the course, there will also be an evaluation through a questionnaire in SurveyXact. The Study Board will handle all evaluations along with any comments from the course responsible teacher.

Furthermore, students can, in accordance with RUCs ‘feel free to state your views’ strategy through their representatives at the study board, send evaluations, comments or insights form the course to the study board during or after the course.

The course starts by introducing the concept of One health and provide theoretical background for understanding the link between the environment and human health.

The course then proceeds with a number of representative cases illustrating how environmental degradation leads to human health impact or how measures to protect human heath can have environmental implications.

After completing the course, students will be able to:

• demonstrate knowledge of the concepts and approach of the ‘One Health’ concept

• assess how optimal health at local, regional, national and global levels can be evaluated based on the interplay among people, plants, animals and their environment

• demonstrate skills to assess which sectors to involve in One Health issues

• analyse and discuss common One Health issues

• design and apply One Health approach to a case study. Including composition of a map of sectors involved and formulation of their role

• undertake One Health assessments of the case as well as be able to interpret and communicate results to other professionals and a broader public

• interpret and communicate relevant One Health issues (written and orally).

Individual oral exam with time for preparation.

Time for preparation including time to pick a question by drawing lots: 3 days.
Time allowed for exam including time used for assessment: 30 minutes.

Permitted support and preparation materials: All.

Assessment: 7-point grading scale.
Moderation: Internal co-assessor.

The oral exam starts with a student presentation followed by a dialog about the course content.

Assessment criteria:

• demonstrate knowledge of the concepts and approach of the ‘One Health’ concept

• demonstrate skills to assess which sectors to involve in One Health issues

The assessment of the oral exam is based on the student’s ability to meet the criteria mentioned above and their ability to

• clearly present and communicate the scientific content of the course

• engage in a scientific dialogue and discussion with the assessor and co assessor
