Detailed description of content |
The course is organized around the use of photography, observations and GIS in applied ethnography. The course consists of lectures and student exercises in photography, map-making and visualization at Roskilde University and self-organised fieldwork. The fieldwork is based upon a commercial case brief by Rødovre Municipality. Lectures, workshops and presentations (subject to change): 1) Intro, consultancy work/ visualization/writing (Jonas Larsen 2 hours) 2) Visit to Rødovre Municipality and presentation of brief by head of planning Jesper Pagh (Jonas and Esbern 2 hours) 3) Visual ethnography and photography theories, approaches and tips (Jonas 2 hours) 4) Photography workshop based on own produced photographs from the fieldwork in Rødovre (Jonas 3 hours) 5) Ethnographic mapping (Esbern 4 hours) 6) Ethnographic mapping workshop (4 hours) based on own fieldwork (Esbern 4 hours) 7) Consultancy writing, presentation and visualization (lecture and workshop based on own writing (Jonas and Esbern 4 hours) 8) Student presentations at Rødovre Municipality (Esbern and Jonas 2 hours) Prior to the course, students will have the possibility to take two course sessions in In-Design and Photoshop, if relevant for the student. |

Overall content |
Ethnography and visualisation are progressions of the Ethnography and Special Analysis course in module 1. It provides advanced knowledge and understanding of and competences in representing and visualising various kinds of fieldwork through GIS-based maps and illustrations. Students learn consultancy work and to carry out fieldwork for companies or organisations. |
Prerequisites for participation in the exam |
Active, satisfactory and regular attendance. Active, satisfactory and regular attendance means Attendance in at least 80% of lectures. Participation in fieldwork. Participation in the teaching, which involves practical exercises, cannot be replaced by an exam. Accordingly, the above cannot be replaced by a re-examination. |

Form of examination |
Individual written take-home assignment given by the lecturer. The assignment must contain minimum 5 and maximum 15 self-produced visual presentations.
The character limit of the assignment is: 4,800-9,600 characters, including spaces. The character limit includes the cover, table of contents, bibliography, figures and other illustrations, but exclude any appendices. The duration of the take-home assignment is 3 days and may include weekends and public holidays. Assessment: 7-point grading scale. |
