Detailed description of content

In collaboration with the Critical Edge Alliance, Roskilde University has chosen to offer a two-week summer course about the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Through this course, participants will address a number of the 17 goals. These will be discussed critically and interdisciplinarily with researchers and teachers from the university’s Department of People & Technology, Department of Social Sciences and Business and the Department of Arts and Communications. We will have guest lectures from consultants working in the SDG, University of Copenhagen and Tata Institute of Social Science (India).

Expected work effort (ECTS-declaration)

It is recommended that you have read the literature prior to the course, as we run with a full day programme. For each two and a half hour lecture the student is expected to use around 6 hours on readings and preparations. Around 40 hours are assigned for group work on a self-selected topic (including preparing a presentation for the final day).

Learning outcomes and assessment criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding:

  • Theoretical and empirical research-based knowledge of the highest international standard on SDGs and their contribution to feasible problem solving proposals at various spatial scales

  • Knowledge of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, use of indicators, mechanisms for monitoring and implementation

  • Knowledge of selected global challenges and UN SDG solution tracks addressing the complexity and context of these challenges

  • Skills:

  • Skills in analyzing, comparing and assessing selected issues and methods to advance solutions for the SDG framework

  • The ability to conceptualize relevant theories and contextualize complex spatial problems within the UN SDG

  • The ability to analyze in different SDGs contexts including on governance (which becomes more complex within the SDGs)

  • Competences:

  • Competency to perform work on selected issues within the UN SDG framework

  • Competency to apply an interdisciplinary methodologic approach to a solution of SDG related problems

  • Competency to use strategic tools to identify and solve specific problems

Overall content

The objective of the course is to enable students to acquire research-based knowledge about the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), the practical application of the framework and mechanisms for monitoring progress and impact.

The course will investigate the UN SDG framework as a driver for change, social innovation and sustainability while investigating critically the means and challenges in implementing the SDGs. The course will through the lens of the UN SDGs - explore a selection of key global challenges such as migration, food chain, sustainability and circular economies, urbanization and social innovation and entrepreneurship.

The course is tailored to address issues of inequality and social inclusion in the application of the UN SDGs and will explore the concept of partnerships for the goals. The course is part of an ongoing project to develop a global approach to global challenges drawing upon experience from partners of the Critical Edge Alliance (CEA).

Prerequisites for participation

Students must submit a Reflection Note no later than 2 days before the start of their studies. The reflection note must relate to the theme and literature of the course as well as expectations of the outcome of the course.

The reflection note has a range of 4800 - 7200 characters incl. gap

The course is passed through active, regular attendance and satisfactory participation.

Active participation is defined as:
The student must participate in course related activities (e.g. workshops, seminars, field excursions, process study groups, working conferences, supervision groups, feedback sessions).

Regular attendance is defined as:
- The student must be present for minimum 75 percent of the lessons.

Satisfactory active participation is defined as:
- The student must during the course hand in three products written individually and in groups (a group product must be followed by a group presentation).

Assessment: Pass/Fail.
