Detailed description of content

The course will in the summer 2021 take place ONLINE

The course is a prerequisite course in connection with conditional uptake.

The course is an intensive fulltime course with online teaching, group work and a self-study period.

Part 1 – the introduction days

This takes place on July 1st to July 5th 2021 where everybody participates and collaborates. The daily format at the ISS will be morning lectures and group/cluster work in the afternoon.

Part 2 – the independent study period

This part stretches across 5 summer weeks (from July 6th – August 4th 2021). During that time, the literature for the course must be read and 5 reflection exercises must be submitted.

Part 3 – is an intensive presence study period online

(August 5th – August 20th 2021) with daily lectures, workshops, clusters, and group activities and synopsis writing based on what you have studied during the independent study period. The course ends with submission of a group synopsis and an oral group exam.

Expected work effort (ECTS-declaration)

Hours: 10 ECST = working 270 hours

  • Introduction days: 18 hours

  • Morning lectures in intensive August period: 8 hours

  • Afternoon clusters: 21 hours

  • Practice day including preparation: 8 hours

  • Synopsis writing: 10 hours

  • Exam 1 hour

= 66 hours

  • Self study period reading, reflection tasks and Q&A: 204 hours (40,8 hours per week)

Learning outcomes and assessment criteria
  • Knowledge of basic methodical and methodological concepts and theory related to different approaches in qualitative science

  • Knowledge of different meta-theoretical positions and how qualitative methods can be used in relation to these

  • Knowledge of analytical consequences of meta-theoretical and methodological choices in qualitative studies of relevant issues

  • Understanding of and ability to reflect on key qualitative methodological approaches and methodology

  • Proficiency in identifying and applying relevant qualitative methods to clarify a research question

  • Proficiency in discussing the use of qualitative methodological approaches to identification, analysis and development of research questions

  • Competencies in applying and critically reflecting on methodological approaches, based on knowledge of the philosophy of science and qualitative methodology

  • Competencies to independently, as well as in collaboration with others, be able to organise and carry out minor studies using the qualitative method

Overall content

The course deals with the connection between the philosophy of science and the qualitative method. The course introduces the student to different qualitative methods and consideration is given to both practical and theoretical aspects and their potentials and limitations. The methods are illustrated from meta-theoretical perspectives and basic assumptions, and with consideration of the importance of the philosophy of science in relation to cognitive interests and knowledge production in the work of formulating research questions and carrying out scientific projects

Prerequisites for participation in the exam

Active, satisfactory and regular participation.

Active, satisfactory and regular participation is defined as follows:

  • Minimum 80% attendance
  • Preparation and submission of up to 6 individual written assignments
  • Participation in exercises and group work
  • Participation in preparations of empirical material and analyses
  • Participation in discussion papers, discussions and summar
Teaching and working methods

Overall, the course alternates between the following different working methods:

  • Academic discussion papers
  • Discussions in groups
  • Group work
  • Individual exercises
  • Preparation of minor written assignments
  • Field work
  • Production of empirical data and analysis

Oral group exam based on a synopsis written by a group

The starting point for the oral exam is the synopsis and the exam is conducted as a dialogue.
There may be posed questions in any part of the curriculum.

Permitted group size: 4-6 students.

The character limit of the synopsis is:
For 4 students: 4,800-9,600 characters, including spaces.
For 5 students: 4,800-9,600 characters, including spaces.
For 6 students: 4,800-9,600 characters, including spaces.
The character limits include the cover, table of contents, bibliography, figures and other illustrations, but exclude any appendices.

Time allowed for exam including time used for assessment is for:
4 students: 60 minutes.
5 students: 75 minutes.
6 students: 90 minutes.

The assessment is individual and based on the student's individual performance.
The assessment is an overall assessment of the written product(s) and the subsequent oral examination..

Permitted support and preparation materials at the oral exam: All.

Assessment: Pass/Fail.
Moderation: Internal co-assessor.
